Dead Things Revived

We're happy to share a little snapshot of some of the Christmas cheer we were happy to spread at Goorin Bros this season.  Joining us was our awesome front lady, Jes.

Merry Christmas, x2!

Merry Christmas, Baby!

THP wants to thank everyone for a wonderful year, filled with new blues and new beginnings.  As a little Christmas gift, we wanted to offer an impromptu recording of one of Bull's favorite Christmas tunes, "Merry Christmas Baby" (and specifically the oh so soulful Charles Brown version).

This gift comes wrapped in the sound of two guitars, one mic, two glasses of whiskey, and some holiday cheer.  Have a very merry Christmas, baby!

Goorin Bros Show

We'll be back at Goorin Bros in Park Slope for two more acoustic sets.  Drop in on Saturday, December 10th, for the old time-y atmosphere and stay for the old time-y blues.

We fire up the acoustic guitars and harmonicas at 6p!

Hell Phone

We'll be doing an acoustic set at the lovely Brooklyn speakeasy, Hell Phone, on Saturday, Oct. 22nd.  We power up the acoustic guitars at 11p!

Your History Comes With You

The latest acoustic song is a slight departure for us.  It's an instrumental that falls into more of a folk vein.  But nevertheless, the play between the harmonicas and guitar carries emotions very familiar to the blues.

Your History Comes With You is an instrumental which remembers.

The Lion Tamer Rag

This Friday release is a little....out there.  We know it.  But writing a rag was incredible fun, even if it spun in unforeseen directions.  Marlon exorcised some demons and got to use his outside voice.  (And Bull takes a classic NOLA-style whistle solo!)  Also: who doesn't love blues that features a glockenspiel?

Check out The Lion Tamer Rag, a N'Awlin's kinda thing but with THP's original touch.

Unkind World Blues

It's Friday!  And that means more original blues off the latest THP album, "Unkind World Blues."

This song features a two-fer of firsts: Marlon not only plays slide for the first time on a THP studio track, but he dusts off the ol' voicebox and has a go at singing the words, not just writing them.

"Unkind World Blues" is about as low, slow, and old timey as you can get.  Enjoy!

Blues For Ronnie Earl

Ronnie Earl--the man from Rego--just happens to be one of the most soulful players out there.  We're delighted to play one for him.  Check out Blues for Ronnie Earl.

Ronnie Earl is one of the great blues guitarists, made greater by his humble nods to those whose spirit he admires, in songs like "Blues for Otis Rush"; "Blues for Martin Luther King"; "Blues for the Homeless"; etc.

This instrumental is a tribute to his spirit, written and performed with THP's own humble nod to his classic, soulful style.

Angelina

The next acoustic tune is live!

Keb' Mo's original version of "Angelina" is such a lovely little ditty that we just had to make her ours.

Bull's Bourbon Blues

So it begins...

"Bull's Bourbon Blues," the first song off the new acoustic blues album, Bare Bones, is live now.  Listen here.

The song is written by Mr. Bull "the Michael" LoBue, who sings and plays rhythm guitar and harmonica on the track, and features Marlon on a lap steel that he built with his very own hands.

The next song to be released is Keb' Mo's "Angelina."  Look for it next week, August 19th!

One Week

The slow release of the new acoustic album, Bare Bones, begins next Friday with the original tune, "Bull's Bourbon Blues," written by THP's own multi-instrumentalist, Michael "the Bull" LoBue.

We'll have Bandcamp, Soundcloud, and ReverbNation links up and running.  (And you'll be able to download the new song for free on Bandcamp.)

And then, a week from next Friday, there will be a second song.  And you'll just have to come back to see what it is....

Guitar Practice

If only this video had been around when I was learning guitar.  It would have saved me so much time.

DCO

We played a show with these guys not so long ago (it was an...eclectic bill) and loved their stuff.  It's not blues, but our tastes are wide and the cats with Dry Clean Only deserve all the nods we can give them.

Have fun.

Friday, August 4th!

We haven't forgotten, oh no.  The full album of acoustic blues is on its way.  In fact, it's less than two weeks away.  On Friday, August 4th, THP will release the first track off the new album, with one new song to follow every week, for nine (nine!) weeks.  That's more than two months' worth of new blues!  It's blues galore!  A smorgas-blues!

With Bare Bones, THP is getting back to the roots of the blues: acoustic instruments and stripped down arrangements, like you'd find on a porch in Georgia or outside Chicago, or on a street corner in NOLA.  The album features six brand new, original THP tunes, and three choice covers by modern greats like Keb' Mo' and Ben Harper.

Check back soon...

Jukebox Hero

UPDATE: Catch the show itself here.  Gotta say, this podcast is pretty addictive.  Brett Stewart pulls music pieces (not all of them even quite qualify as 'songs') from a wide array of genres and styles, all by hardworking, undiscovered (if we may call them that) indie artists like THP.  I especially appreciate Mr. Stewart's keen-eared intro- and outro-ductions to the tunes.  Knowing enough about the artists and their genres to succinctly capture what makes their stuff worthwhile is a very difficult task, a skill journalists of every stripe spend years cultivating and are lucky to acquire.

I'm also a sucker for Brett's call for community.  That's a conversation THP has had on several occasions (hi, Lovehowl!; hi, Irresponsibles!).

If you want to hear how THP is "filling a void in the indie music scene, one that sorely needs to be filled" (thanks, Brett, we're definitely trying!), you can hear "Dead Things" close out the show starting at 54:42.  But really, I recommend just sitting down with a cold beverage and taking in the whole podcast--treat yourself to an act of horizon expansion.

~~~~~
One of the tunes off our EP, After the Storms, has been picked up by the excellent indie music podcast, The Jukebox, and will be featured on their show today.  Today!
To find out which tune, go join Brett and his team later today (like, really today!).
Why Blues Works
"The more art is controlled, limited, worked over, the more it is free" --Igor Stravinsky in The Poetics of Music, 1942
This quote from the composer of Petrushka and The Rite of Spring puts me in mind of one of my longstanding meditations: that blues music is still alive as a genre because it presents well-worn rules for what constitutes "blues."  12-bar, 8-bar, 7 chords, 9 chords, I-IV-V...whatever it is, you know it's blues when you hear it.  I love writing and playing blues because these structures are there to be played with, because these rules have been established over generations.  They control and limit my choices, which leads me to better, more inventive choices.
Any art form which works this way will never die, no matter how far away from the mainstream tastes of the moment it seems (seems!) to stray.  Keep the blues alive!
10 Tips For Good Band Members
Anthony Stauffer of the excellent Texas Blues Alley (formerly Stevie Snacks) shares some insights into what qualifies as good citizenship in a band.  Rules to live by!
A sample: "Everybody loves when a tediously planned rehearsal is cut short.  Every once in a while in the middle of rehearsal remember that you've gotta be somewhere and you gotta be on the road in five minutes.  You just gave them their evening back, so congratulations!"
And those musicians who learn the songs in the practice room--rather than at home beforehand--do indeed make me feel even more prepared.  I say, thanks for the morale boost!  Now let me show you those changes again.
Genius.
"Bare Bones"
Coming soon: a studio album of stripped-down acoustic blues.  Stay tuned!
Thank you, Goorin Bros.
It seems everyone had an excellent time--blues was played and cocktails were had.  Thank you, Goorin Bros., for hosting a wonderful evening.
Niji Magazine
Niji Magazine is telling folks about us.
They describe themselves as folks who "write about the things we’re passionate about. Whatever your talent, if your work inspires us, we believe it will inspire our readers.  To put it simply we showcase the best emerging talent from the areas of fashion, art and music!"
All of which means we will take their nod in our direction as a proper compliment!
Acoustic Show
We'll finally be doing something that we've been talking about for a long time: a stripped down acoustic show.
Join us for two sets of original acoustic blues, 7p-9p, on Friday, May 6th.  We'll be entertaining the crowd at Goorin Bros.  And did I mention there'll be cocktails?  Come hear THP as you've never heard us!
A New Chapter
We're beginning a new chapter over here at THP, and are reminded of The Allman Brothers Band as we do so.  A lot of great players cycled through that band, while Gregg and Dickey continued to drive their vision of the band forward.
Some announcements are on the way, and we're very excited about what's happening right now and what it means for the sound of THP!
Normal Service Will Resume Shortly
Having gone hard for the month of February with as many live shows as we could play and as many new tunes as we could learn, THP will be taking a bit of a rest in March.  We will be regrouping, writing some new original tunes, and generally gearing up for the shows already lined up in April (Black Bear Bar! Rockwood Music Hall! and more to come!).
This is not to say that there will be radio silence here at THP central, just that we will be working diligently behind the scenes for the next few weeks.  More soon!
Thank You, Silvana!
Week 4 of our residency has officially come and gone.  We would like to thank Silvana for providing us with such a wonderful opportunity.  We'd especially like to thank Vlad, the excellent sound man at Silvana, who helped us get exactly the sound we wanted for four weeks in a row.  We'd also like to thank Amy Sheehan of The Lovehowl and Rachel Dalton of The Irresponsibles for sitting in with us this past Tuesday.  (And thanks to their respective band mates for lending these lovely ladies for the evening!)
Overall, it was an excellent experience.  We would do it again in a little heartbeat!
Saw this before our very energetic show at Bitter End.  The gods of the NYC blues-rock music scene were sending us a sign--they were pleased that night!
Be Bitter With Us
We're back at the legendary Bitter End this Thursday, the 28th.  Come on out to a great sounding venue for a raucous night of original blues.  Tell the door man you're here to see THP and get a complimentary slow nod of approval.
We hit the stage running at 10pm!
Rockwood!
Join us for our first show in 2016!  We're closing down Rockwood Music Hall with the late night slot on Friday, January 15th, at 12:30am.
We're going to do a slowed down, classic blues-style show, which is the best way (we've found) to ease into Saturday morning hangovers.  Join us!
